50 years

In September 2001, "Hydroprojekt" Ltd celebrated 50th anniversary of the establishment of state owned Central Office of Studies and Designs of Hydraulic Engineering "Hydroprojekt", and, at the same time, the jubilee of transformed in 1992 limited liability company.

For 50 years of its existence "Hydroprojekt"'s organisational structure, as well as number and specialisation of its regional offices, has been continuously changing. At the peak of its development "Hydroprojekt" contained 28 designing teams, and the number of its employees at the beginning of the 80s exceeded one thousand. designing teams have been covering specialisations within the field of water management and hydraulic engineering, as well as related disciplines, such as steel construction, mechanical equipment, electrical installations and power generation, automation, water supply, wastewater treatment, architecture and land development. In 1970, research department with the soil mechanics laboratory has been assembled, and between the years 1973-1977 - hydraulic laboratory constructed in Wloclawek.

In the initial period of its existence "Hydroprojekt" was mainly involved in problems related to the issue of waterway development, elaborating several comprehensive studies on the Vistula and Bug River navigability, modernisation of the Odra waterway or the conceptual study of the Polish reach of Odra-Danube canal. These studies, compatible with contemporary European tendencies, included projects of the first investments constructed in the post-war period:

  • barrages on the Upper Vistula River in Przewóz, Łączany and Dąbie;
  • barrage in Brzeg Dolny on the Odra River;
  • so called Warsaw Water Junction: Żeranski port and canal along with Dębe barrage on the Narew River, creating Zegrzynski reservoir.

In the second decade of operation "Hydroprojekt" has developed comprehensive studies on major issues of water management in Poland. We were the main authors of:

  • water management plans for selected industrial and municipal areas such as Śląsko-Krakowski Industrial District and Lubelski Coal Basin,
  • Vistula River Project - elaborated at the turn of the 60s and 70s by Polish specialists with the technical and financial assistance of United Nations, using the mathematical modelling system for solving of problems of water distribution in river basins and water management optimisation for the first time in Poland,
  • regional strategic plans of water management and water protection development which, quitting official socio-economic plans, for the first time considered various hypothesis of national development in the prospective of a few decades - elaborated in the 80s.

Throughout "Hydroprojekt's" existence, elaboration of complex technical documentation for hydraulic structures in the full range of works and in all stages of designing has been the major area of our activity. "Hydroprojekt" elaborated detailed designs for over 60 large hydraulic systems, having essential significance for water management in Poland. In the majority, these investments have been finalised.

The main objects of water management in Poland

The most important investments:

Dębe barrage on the Narew River with hydropower plant of 20 MW and recreational reservoir for Warsaw municipality, at the same time being a source of water supply for Warsaw.

Wloclawek barrage on the Vistula River, designed as the first of the barrages of the Lower Vistula cascade, contemporarily planned, consistent of 10 span reinforced concrete weir with flow capacity of 11 000 cu m/s, main earth dam 20 m high, hydropower plant of 162 MW and navigation lock;

water storage reservoir in Tresna - main element of the Sola River cascade (along with Porąbka reservoir and compensation reservoir in Czaniec), earth dam of 37 m height creates a water storage reservoir of 100 mln cu m capacity, used as important source of water supply for Silesian municipalities; hydropower plant of 21 MW power output, adjacent to the dam.

Sulejów water storage reservoir on the Pilica River of 75 mln cu m capacity, being a source of water supply for Lodz (water intake and transfer pipelines of flow capacity 3,25 cu m/s); foil sealing of significant part of reservoir's bed has been applied here for the first time in Poland.

Water storage reservoir Dobczyce on the Raba River, earth dam of 30,6 m height with impervious membrane of asphaltic concrete, creating reservoir of 125 mln cu m, serving as the main source of water supply for Krakow.

Water storage reservoirs' system Czorsztyn-Niedzica and Sromowce Wyżne on the Dunajec River, operating since July 1997; the earth dam Czorsztyn-Niedzica of 57 m height, creating reservoir of 232 mln cu m capacity; hydropower plant of 92 MW equipped with 2 reversible turbo sets, enabling pumping operation with use of located downstream compensation reservoir Sromowce Wyżne compose the complex.

Designing for international clients

Its export activities "Hydroprojekt" commenced in 1960, elaborating comprehensive, lasting over 5 years studies of water management for Amarah area in Iraq. During the following years "Hydroprojekt" performed in Iraq numerous other works, which are listed below:

  • studies of water regime for the areas along the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers (Shat-Al-Basrah Project, area of 260 000 ha),
  • Basrah barrage on Shat-Al-Arab (weir, canal and navigation lock). During construction of this object, accomplished in very difficult geological conditions "Hydroprojekt" applied the new solutions for subsoil consolidation. To ensure stability of the structure, the preliminary subsoil consolidation by geodrains have been applied, as well as intermediate placement of the reinforced concrete walls made in the slurry trench excavations.
  • Feasibility study of agricultural area development of 3 areas located in Northern Iraq, as well as technical documentation and contract documents for pilot farm construction (Ranya Project, area of 90 000 ha).
  • Construction supervision over Badush Dam on the Upper Tigris River along with verification of technical documentation elaborated by Energoprojekt Belgrad.
  • Study of development and energy utilisation along the Upper Tigris River reach.

Beside works for Iraq, "Hydroprojekt carried out construction supervision on behalf of the Client over Hammam Grouz dam in Algeria, design and supervision over amelioration of water regime within the area of thermal power plants Yeniköy and Kemerköy construction in Turkey, as well as many construction supervision contracts in Libya.

Between the years 1968-1990 "Hydroprojekt" elaborated several projects of modernisation of barrages on the Laba and Weltawa waterways in Czech Republic (weirs, navigation locks). Outdated and exploited weirs with needle type gates, constructed at the beginning of the XX century, have been exchanged by modern structures with sector gates and hydraulic drives. Modernisation of the old navigation locks included their heightening, lengthening, reconstruction of the heads and exchange of the closing gates. They were:

  • weirs and barrages on the Elbe River: Roudnice n/L, České Kopisty, Lovosice, Obříství, Dolní Beřkovice, Týnec n/L,
  • navigation locks on Elbe River, total of 12 objects such as: Veletov, Kolin, Pardubice, Nymburk, Kostomlatký, Brandys n/L,
  • weirs on the Weltawa River: Troja in Prague, Vraňany,
    More information can be found on the web pages: www.pvl.cz and www.pla.cz

Beside all of the above "Hydroprojekt" designed structures such as: coal loading river port and shipyard in Chvaletice, coal loading river port in Lovosice, and between the years
1985-1992, wastewater treatment plant in Český Krumlov, constructed for Paper Works in Vetřní k/Č.Krumlova with appurtenant structures.
(information regarding this WWTP on the web page: www.jip.cz)
All of this objects have been constructed. They have been faultlessly exploited for many years.
